Mdm Tham Siang Wah Receives the Outstanding STEM Teacher Award

Hwa Chong Institution is proud to announce that Mdm Tham Siang Wah, Senior Teacher of Mathematics, has been honoured with the prestigious Outstanding STEM Teacher Award (OSTA). This biennial award is a significant accolade, co-organised by the Science Teachers Association of Singapore (STAS) and the Singapore Association for the Advancement of Science (SAAS), with the support of the Ministry of Education.

The Outstanding STEM Teacher Award recognises educators who are exemplary role models in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). It celebrates those who have made meaningful contributions and impactful advancements in STEM education and programmes within their schools.

Mdm Tham’s dedication to her students and her innovative approach to education are reflected in her teaching philosophy:

Scam Alert: Impersonation Phone Calls

We have been alerted to incidents where members of the public, including contractors, have received phone calls from individuals attempting to impersonate staff of Hwa Chong Institution.

Beware of these scam phone calls:

The scammers typically invite contractors or vendors to bid for jobs but require them to purchase materials from specific companies. Such jobs may include delivery of flowers, provision of equipment or materials, or services like photography. In some cases, the scammers may even request the vendor to meet on the HCI campus.

Protect yourself:

Be vigilant. If you receive such a call, ignore it and do not pick up.
Do not transfer any money to the caller, either via remittance agencies, banks, or any other means.
Do not provide the caller with any personal information, such as name, NRIC number, bank account or credit card details, One-time password (OTP) etc.

Mr Ang Yong Qin Receives Associate of Academy of Singapore Teachers Innovator Awards 2024

Mr. Ang Yong Qin, a Physics lecturer, has been awarded the prestigious Associate of Academy of Singapore Teachers Award as an Innovator. The award was presented at the Academy Awards for Professional Development Ceremony 2024 on 7 Nov 2024.

Mr. Ang's project, the “Ipsative Student Assessment Tracker,” is an innovative Excel interface designed to assist educators in tracking and analysing student performance. This tool automatically generates visual reports and requires no prior knowledge of Excel or coding, making it highly accessible to teachers. By enabling the easy input of student results, the tracker provides immediate, comprehensive insights into both individual and class-wide academic progress, supporting personalised, data-driven instruction and monitoring of students’ growth over time.

The “Ipsative Student Assessment Tracker” was developed with the aim of fostering a growth mindset in students by focusing on personal development and self-improvement. The tool was created in response to the need for user-friendly solutions that simplify data analysis, aiding teachers in customising their teaching approaches to better cater to students’ unique needs.

This recognition underscores the significance of innovative educational tools that enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of data analysis. Mr. Ang's contribution highlights the importance of practical teaching solutions in advancing educational excellence.

SYFC Inter School Areomodelling Competition 2024

The competition, held on 26 Oct 2024 at the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC), showcased skillful performances across various aviation challenges. Our students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, precision, and passion for aeromodelling.

The competition featured a range of exciting events: Launch Glider, Remote-Controlled Aeromodel, Control-Line Aeromodel, First Person View Drone Race, and Flight Simulation.

We are delighted to share that Hwa Chong Institution Boarding School (HCIBS) has been awarded top honours in the MOE Inter-Hostel Competition, securing the highest rating among 11 hostels. Alongside this, HCIBS has also clinched the MOE Sparks Award (Gold) and Innovation Award, making us the only school to achieve both distinctions!

The awards were presented by Ms. Lee Hwee Ping, Deputy Director of the Student Placement and Services Division, on 18 Oct 2024 during the School and Hostel Staff Appreciation and Learning Day, organized by the MOE Scholarship Branch. The awards recognise our efforts to support scholars in adapting seamlessly to the boarding community, foster connections with the local community through our engagement with Taman Jurong CC, and cultivate a sense of belonging to Singapore through our National Day events.

Our school spirit of 自强不息 is exemplified through the significant improvements made in boarding this year. From implementing technology to streamline attendance taking and installing solar-powered lamps to enhance sustainability, to enriching our boarding culture with “Make a Difference” collar pins and expanding the Integrated Boarding Programme on Education and Career Guidance for the benefit of our scholars, the boarding staff continue to innovate to better care for our boarders.

A special congratulations goes to our Boarding Mentor, Mr. Charles Low, who was honoured with the prestigious MOE Heart Award for his unwavering dedication to guiding and supporting our boarders. We are incredibly proud of his outstanding commitment and the positive impact he has made!

C2 Graduation & Admin Day 2024

On 7 Oct 2024, the C2s came together for their graduation ceremony, a momentous occasion marking the culmination of their two-year journey at Hwa Chong. It was a day filled with mixed emotions for many — heartfelt farewells intertwined with the anticipation of new beginnings.

In the Cheng Yi Auditorium and School Hall, they listened to inspiring speeches from Guests-of-Honour, Colonel Wayne Ho, Mr Harris Rusdi Chai, and Mr Chia Min Chong. The Principal, Mr Lee Peck Ping, also encouraged the graduands to forge their own paths in life and write their own life stories.

CSIT Computing Scholarship 2024

Nine students from Hwa Chong Institution received the CSIT (Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies) Computing Scholarship in 2024. The CSIT Computing Scholarship seeks to inspire and develop young talents to pursue both education and careers in the tech industry.

Along with cash grants, recipients participate in a one-week experiential program at CSIT at the end of JC1, where they gain practical cybersecurity skills and engage with CSIT engineers.

2024亚洲青年华语论坛 Asian Youth Chinese Forum 2024

由华中双文化课程学生主办的2024年亚洲青年华语论坛（AYCF）于7月6日-7月10日举行。本次论坛邀请了18所学府校两百多名来自中国、台湾、香港、澳门和其他本地特选学校的学生共襄盛举。今年的论坛主题为“巴尼时代下传统文化的传承与创新”。

学生筹委经过几个月的精心策划与筹备，为论坛制作了主题歌曲并安排了精彩的活动。在五天的时间里，与会者聆听专业讲座，了解新加坡华族文化中心，国家文物局以及电台与数码媒体在传承文化方面所作出的努力；分组深入讨论了由主论题引发出的各种分论题；同学们也有机会参观新加坡美术馆，走访本地的传统行业，体验制作红龟粿、豆沙饼与薄饼等，了解新加坡的艺术团体和企业如何在传承的路上积极求新求变，迎合新时代的品味。今年的主宾是本地资深广告创意人林少芬女士。经历了六轮的学术讨论之后，本地和海外学校共同针对一项传统文化制定了振兴方案，并且集结了组员的想法完成了分论题小组呈现。

The Asian Youth Chinese Forum (AYCF) 2024, organised by students from the Hwa Chong Bicultural Studies Programme, took place from 6 to 10 Jul 2024 under the theme “巴尼时代下传统文化的传承与创新”. The forum welcomed over 200 enthusiastic delegates from 18 schools across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and local Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools to discuss pressing global issues.

Across five days, delegates participated in a diverse array of enriching activities. The event began with city tours over the weekend for overseas delegates, offering them the chance to explore the cultural landmarks of Chinatown and Haji Lane, while enjoying the vibrancy of food stalls and souvenir shops at Bugis Mall and Chinatown Street Market. Sunday’s itinerary included a visit to Universal Studios Singapore, where delegates bonded over thrilling roller-coaster rides and imaginative attractions.

The forum was officially launched with the Opening Ceremony on 8 Jul 2024. Delegates eagerly engaged in conceptual discussions, brainstorming ideas on how to preserve and innovate traditional culture in a BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Non-Linear, Incomprehensible) world. They also took part in the inaugural Concepts-Programmes Integration activities, gaining insights into traditional culture through interactive games and activities.

The forum featured three keynote speeches, where delegates interacted with renowned experts who shared valuable insights from their respective fields. We were honoured to have Ms Lim Sau Hoong, co-founder and CEO/Executive Creative Director of 10AM Communications, as the Guest-of-Honour. Her iconic Guinness advertisement 你怕黑吗 has become a global classic. We deeply appreciate Ms Lim’s presence and her enlightening talk on the preservation and innovation of traditional culture.

Delegates’ passionate discussions culminated in a digital exhibition, where they presented their creative solutions and approaches to ensuring the relevance of traditional culture in our evolving society. In addition, they participated in thought-provoking and entertaining group presentations, showcasing their work and receiving insightful feedback from esteemed judges.

One of the highlights of the forum was the creation and production of the first-ever AYCF theme song, "写下青春" (Write Our Youth), which captured the collective creativity and experience of all participants. The event concluded with a spirited Grand Finale, leaving delegates with a sense of pride and accomplishment, along with many cherished memories and emotions to carry home.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Principal Mr Lee, Deputy Principals Ms Ho, Mrs Chin, and Ms Lim, Dean Mr Tan, HOD MTL Mr Lam, Teacher Mentor Mr Bok, and all supporting teachers and administrative staff for their invaluable contributions. A special acknowledgment goes to the student organising team, whose dedication and hard work ensured the success of this forum. We are confident that all delegates left with new friendships, enriched perspectives, and fond memories, truly embodying the spirit of cultural exchange and innovation that defines AYCF.

Mid Autumn Festival MAF Celebration 2024 at HCI High School

On 13 Sep 2024, the High School section of HCI celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival for the first time in recent years. The evening’s theme, An Evening of Tang Dynasty Splendour, was vividly brought to life at the Clock Tower and Oei Tiong Ham Hall, with engaging set-ups and game stalls designed to immerse students in the cultural significance of the festival. The celebration was made possible through the collaborative efforts of student leaders from the BSP, CLEP, and Ortus Councils.

It was a night of lively festivity, as HCI students were joined by guests from Nanyang Girls’ High School and the HCI Parent Support Group. A key highlight of the event was the official commissioning of the Chinese Cultural Corner at Oei Tiong Ham Hall by Principal Mr Lee Peck Ping and other School Leaders. The new corner features interactive displays centred on Chinese language and culture, with a special focus on the Singaporean Chinese identity.

The evening concluded on a high note with The MAF Voice, showcasing the musical and vocal talents of HCI students. It was a joyous occasion for all, perfectly capturing the festive spirit of reunion.

【月照华岗风华盛唐】华中（中学部）2024年中秋节庆祝会

sm调教于9月13日（农历八月十一）首次于中学部庆祝中秋节，举校共庆团圆。当晚的主题为【月照华岗风华盛唐】，旨在通过巧思妙想将盛世长安的中秋气氛重新演绎，再现华岗。当晚，黄仲涵堂随着不同文化展摊活动的推进，人潮涌现，络绎不绝。在双文化课程自理会、语文特选课程自理会以及启元共识联学生理事会成员的组织带领下，华中学子亲身体验到了中秋佳节的节庆气息。我们也很荣幸能邀请到南洋女中的同学以及华中家长会的成员一起同欢，共襄盛举。

庆祝会上，李白彬校长与学校领导也为新落成的文化角落，即【华中文化酷】进行开幕。【华中文化酷】通过互动电子设备，将华族文化常识以轻松有趣的多媒体形式呈现给参观者。展出的内容不但会定期进行更新，也会突出新加坡华人的身份认同元素，做到“胸怀祖国，放眼天下”。

活动的文娱表演环节【中秋好声音】，展现了华中学子的歌唱与演奏才华，让到场的观众在悠扬悦耳的歌声和琴声中，感受到“但愿人长久，千里共婵娟”的节日意义。
